Fight The Frump: The Not-T and the Hot-T

'NUFF SAID.

No? Let me 'splain then.

It's Fight the Frump Friday where we strive to
help women get their sexy back. Or at least help them not look like that frumpity-dump mom driving carpool. You know the one I'm talking about.

Today's tip is one near and dear to my heart. It's focuses on grown women wearing character t shirts. Outside their home. (Frankly, I don't even like to see it inside the home.) (I also know it is none of my business what they do inside their home. I'm just sayin'.)

I'm not going to relegate this to only the character t shirts though. I'm going to also include any t shirt that has cute little sayings, cartoon characters, arrows pointing toward the belly region proclaiming that you have a baby on board, sweet pictures of angels in heaven, etc. (Or Count Dracula. Like Sister Sassy's wearing to the left. Bad Sassy!)

Unless you're working in the garden or exercising, those shirts ought not be on your body. Not if your goal is to look and feel like a smokin' hot momma.

Today, I'm going to share with you some fabulous options that are just as comfortable as your cotton t-shirts, only more flattering. These shirts will make you look (and feel) cute and sassy without any extra effort when you run in to get milk at the grocery s
tore or are at the park with your family.

Now, I know some of you love your t-shirts. You might be a little attached to them. And that may be because you have been wearing them since 11th grade. Am I right? Trust me on this one though. That sweet little Pretty in Pink shirt? It stopped looking good after you graduated from high school.

And I know you have amazing memories of going to Lilith Fair with your girlfriends. I do too. I was there. Four times. I bought the t-shirts. I wear them under my sweatshirts in my backyard sitting by the fire pit. Roasting marshmallows and drinking beer.

Are you ready now? I'll take baby steps, 'k?

If you are reluctant to give up the basic t, how about trying these instead? They're soft, comfortable, and yet they offer a little something more.

Cute huh?

Are you feeling a little more daring now?

Check out these options.

Aren't they
adorable? Just pair them with your jeans, capris a cute little skirt. Maybe a pair of shorts. You will look as good as you will feel.

These tops can be found at Gap and Ann Taylor Loft for a very reasonable price.

If you are more cost-conscious, check out your local resale store. (I loves me a good resale store. There is nothing like the thrill of finding a really good deal.)

Today, I went to my favorite resale store and bought a pair of DKNY jeans, a suh-weet cropped camel-colored jacket (tags still on) a pair of brown trousers (tags still on), a cute black v-neck top (tags still on) and a J Crew fleece vest (because it will be winter here for another 18 months) all for $27.00. You can't be that, huh?

Ok, I LOVE Hot Topic (where I got my shirt) and I think I'm cute :). It's my style, I love my "counting shirt" as Kiki Calls it. AND...I'd wear more like this. I'd wear a Wonder Woman T and JEM, and probably She-RA too. As long as the t-shirt was a cute baby doll sort.

Also love my I Need A Nap shirt.

But I DO NOT love over big disney t-shirts...unless you wear it to bed.

Don't ya just love it when you find good deals. I do have to say I almost bought a Wonder Woman Baby doll tee the other day. It was really really cute. But I do agree. One of my pet peeves is wearing t-shirts and sweatshirts with Store or Brand Logos across the front.

I can safely say that I do not own a single character t-shirt. My children have oodles of them, because I think they are awesome! But, I haven't ever felt I could pull it off as a momma. I wear mostly tshirts every day though. Fitted tshirts for women, but tshirts nonetheless. I hate getting all dolled up for...staying at home. BUT, I love that pink top and the floral one is pretty cute too. Thanks for letting me know where I could find them.

Ashlee- on weekends when I'm not leaving the house...I sometimes don't even get dressed! ACK :)

Okay, I hate the disney and other theme park/attraction/character type t-shirts. Especially oversized.

However, I am guilty as charged on wearing superman, batman, spiderman, and mighty mouse kids underoos t-shirts. They fit tightly, though, so I still maintain that I look pretty hot in them. But yes, when I am wearing the same size t-shirts as the 11 year old boy in the bedroom across the hall, maybe I should think about growing up a bit. I don't think I put most of those shirts on last summer. Maybe I am growing out of it.

I love those other styles! And I've totally been brainstorming on how to dress in a t-shirt and look like an adult, but not an old stuffy, frumpy adult. Thanks for the tips, they will be helpful. You are just piling on the reasons for me to go to ATL. I hate you for that.

Ha, I love it! You absolutely hit on one of my biggest pet peeves. I don't even buy character stuff for my kids. (They are really deprived and I'm a top member of the Mean Mommies Club, so there.)
Very cute tops!

OMG, I need to go shopping. Those blouses are adorable!

As for the character tees... I know a couple that wears matching Disney sweatshirts and tee shirts all time time- at holiday parties, dinners out, at church... yeah, I know.

Great Deals!!

I love your shirt ideas. I have one shirt with a saying on it but i had it made for me. It says:

I AM AT WORK!

I go so tired of people asking me if I work!

I love the shirt suggestions!!!!
Thank you so much for telling me where I can buy them.
I love me some Ann Taylor Loft!

I have to say Ms. Chic, who made fun of my count shirt- is wearing a shirt almost identical to the salmon one.

Oooh I love these t-shirts. You are making me want to shop and I am not allowed until after payday next Friday.

You'll be glad to hear I have never worn a character t-shirt, not outside or in the home :-)

Aww... do I have to give up the t-shirt that says "North Korea has no Seoul"? I love that one!

Eternal Sunshine said...

I do love t-shirts, but I don't have any character shirts. Probably beacuse of my First Fight the Frump: For every one item of clothing you buy, you must get rid of one item of (Preferrably frumpy) clothing.

I do SO love those cutsie shirts you presented as alternatives, though!

Ha! I just posted a picture of my son in one of the kinds of tshirts you mentioned. At least I'm not the one wearing it...though the saying would fit. It says Control Freak. {though my issue isn't with video games!}

Ok Sister,
Usually I say AMEN and tell you to bring it on... but.... not this time.
Cool T-shirts are like jeans. Yes there are UGLY jeans out there and most people where them, but there are some really good looking jeans out there too. And, given the right color, size, style and attitude of the girl wearing it VIOLA! It can be Hot, Sexy, Cute, or just plain fun.
So there
:P
PS - Now I KNOW what I'm getting you for christmas ;)

Jimmy,

You're right. There are cute t-shirts out there. I posted several examples of them. Not a cartoon character to be found on them either.

I'm with HB. Character tees (and not to mention all these stupid t-shirts with the stupid ironic sayings on them that won't go away) should really probably just not be worn in general. I'm not such a fan of baby doll tees either. (Sorry Sassy.)If there is an urgent need to wear them however, I think limiting them to the gym or to bed is the best way to go.

I saw in the latest "Lucky" magazine that T-shirts aren't going to be so tight and snug this spring. They're not baggy, though...actually very attractive.

Mackenzies Momma said...

UH, *glances around furitively* well I guess there goes all the last of my t-shirts that fit. Wait! do I have to get rid of my 'show shirt'? The one I have with my goat pic, on it for when I'm at the goat shows? Does that count as a character Tee?

I am so with you on this. Seeing a grown woman in a winnie-the-pooh t-shirt just about gives me a rash.

Love the Shirts. I have never been one for character shirts.

Hey can you do a little thing on cool glasses, I need to get some new ones and don't want granny, I want something kind of funky, but not over the top.
