The Murder Shows

I was sitting in church one day when the female co-pastor began talking about how she goes to bed around 9pm every night because that is when all the "murder shows" come on. She, of course, is talking about all the Law and Orders, the CSI's and what have you.

I tend to be ok with both sets of shows but I cannot watch episodes where women and children are being hurt. I just can't. I watched an episode of Law and Order SVU where Elliott found a woman chained to a bed, trying to birth a baby. She died, baby survived. I still think about that stupid episode.

Last night JimmyEW, who hardly ever watches TV of any sort, decided to watch Medium. And even weirder, he decided to watch it in bed. Something we do maybe once every few months.

Now, I really like Medium. I'm drawn to weird shows like this. But last night it was about a young woman kidnapped and the Medium chick kept dreaming about her last moments of life. There was fearful screaming, pleading and terror. I, was trying to read. I couldn't read as I listened to the believable sounds of murder. I covered my ears and put my head in my pillow, JimmyEW asking, "are you ok?" and gradually turning down the sound.

I don't mind that he watched it, but not in bed. That was hardly the last thing I wanted to hear before I drifted off to sleep. Especially since I am prone to nasty nightmares.

I made him let me read for another half hour to try to cleanse my pallet. It seemed to work, I had no nightmares. Unless you call a surprise party where the only two guests you see are former college friends who you broke up with cause they sucked. That was a bit awkward.

What's that? You want to comment? Just click on the itty-bitty words below that say "Gimme Some Sugar". Can you see them? Good. We can't wait to chat with you.

I do not like horror movies or scary shows at all. I do like suspense and I know that they "pluck" those shows from the headlines, but I hear ya when it comes to that kind of stuff. I refuse to watch horror movies because evil comes from one place so why would I glorify that, right? I like the Hallmark channel and I am proud of it and if anyone don't like it I'll kick their butt (last part to be manly) Anyway, that's my thoughts!

Before I had Logan I used to love love love those Law & Order type shows. I still do unless they involve hurting a kid. Then it just makes me sick and I have to change the channel.

Wade, I love Hallmark too. I also like Lifetime, but I'm a chick.

I am the same way. If something involves a crime against a child, I cannot watch it.

I have to say, I love the crime shows. SVU bothers me sometimes, but I do enjoy the genre.

Thanks for asking about the story--I'm still plugging along. I have 19 days to finish it in time for sumbission, so I'm a wee bit panicked, but it's coming together.

How is your writing?

I am a Law and Order addict. Both SVU and Criminal Intent. They are on three different channels, so you can practically watch it all day if you feel so inclined. {I don't} The only problem I have with them is that I have an overactive imagination and so I am now a paranoid mommy. I worry my child is going to be abducted by a creep, or something bad is going to happen to him when he gets off the bus. If he isn't home by 4:15 I immediately assume there's something wrong. It's always just been that the bus was running late, but I can't help but have that panicky feeling. The world is turning into a yucky place and Law and Order brings it right into my home. Am I a more aware parent or should I turn it off so that I don't freak out as much? Sigh...

My husband and I watch two CSI's every week (the original and NY--I can't stand David Caruso). I agree that the ones about children getting hurt are too scary. Some of the ones about a woman getting killed are not too intense for me if I wouldn't be in that situation--like a showgirl gets murdered in a casino. But a suburban mom gets attacked in her home...yeah, that would give me bad dreams. I had to stop watching The Sopranos because it was just too violent--I'd dream about it every time.

I have similar issues with tv and bed. I have to give myself a good 1-2 hours after almost any kind of tv show to let my brain "come down" some after a show. I can NOT watch Without a Trace b/c it plays on my deepest fear of abduction of my children. Whew!

I've really enjoyed reading your blog. Come visit me some time. :)

I love the "murder" shows but have a hard time watching them before bed. I'm more of a What Not to Wear kinda thing before bed. Fluff. I like fluff.

Glad you didn't have nightmares!

Happy belated mother's day!

I'm a total wimp on horror anything. And I can't imagine it right before falling asleep!

Wade, nothing wrong with watching hallmark :)

HB, uh, you know how I feel about Lifetime.

Seester, lets get together and watch cheesy feel-good 80's movies.

Jen- writing here and there. Not as much as I like. Time time time.... ugh. But oh well. I keep thinking I'll turn a corner somewhere and things will slow down. I think I'm fooling myself.

Ashlee, not sure. A little from column a, a little from b. No, just kidding. I am worst case scenario mom all the way. I mean, really. I'll think about what happens if I'm simultaneously attacked by two wild animals on a mountain with Boogs and Kiki, what do I do. Not kidding.

Hairline-its funny how stuff like that finds its way into our dreams. Same thing happens to me.

Krissy, thanks for stopping by. I'll have to check you out.

Meg, I don't think of Project Runway as fluff because I find it very creative. I like Top Model for the same reason, I could skip around the catty junk that happens but I want to see the photo shoot and the after photos. I LOVE that. But I'm a photo nerd so...

Jen-I'm with you

David, I agree too. I liked that she tagged it that way. And she's right, so many of the shows at that time of night are that kind of show. I do like these shows, I've loved Law and Order but I just can't take the sounds and scenes of women and children being hurt and murdered.... yet, isn't odd that I watch Dexter? I cover my eyes and he only kills other serial killers so I think I make peace with that.

I hate those shows. I can't stand hearing about women or children being hurt. My SIL is a rape survivor and is paralyzed by PTSD and she can't stop watching Law and Order. I wish her husband would intervene. I think it is awful what passed for entertainment. I have watched Medium once or twice and it was interesting but too much about violence to make it a regular show.
